Since 1991, Chicago-based organization, Cara, has been helping people experiencing poverty and homelessness move toward self-sufficiency by assisting them in finding jobs and opportunity.

Thanks to Cara and its two social enterprises, over 10,000 jobs and a whole lot more have been made possible for those who need it most. Having just celebrated its 30th anniversary, Cara and their immense impact is the focus of today’s podcast with our special guest President & CEO, Maria Kim.

Welcome to In the Business of Change, where we speak with social entrepreneurs impacting their communities and the world.  I’m your host Elisa Birnbaum publisher and editor in chief of SEE Change Magazine.

On today’s podcast, we speak with Maria Kim of Cara, an organization that I profiled extensively in my book In the Business of Change due to the tremendous work they do on the ground in Chicago. In our conversation Maria highlights the challenges Cara and its social enterprises have endured over the years, particularly during the pandemic – and how their unique approach has helped them rise above.

About to retire from the organization, Maria discusses the moments at Cara over her 15-year tenure that make her most proud and shares the lessons she’s learned along the way.
