What is Social Enterprise?

Although there is currently no universally agreed-upon definition of social enterprise and social entrepreneurship, in the aim of being as inclusive as possible, SEE Change adopts an extremely broad definition, as follows:

Social Enterprise: A venture with a social mission at its core, often referred to as having a double or triple bottom line.

Social Entrepreneur: An individual who establishes an enterprise* with the aim of addressing one or more of society’s many challenges.

* Definition of enterprise:

  •  a project or undertaking, typically one that is difficult or requires effort;
  • a business or company;
  • entrepreneurial economic activity.
